Charles Eston Johnson, Jr., known affectionately as Eston to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at home on December 31st at the age of 86. Born on August 23, 1938, in Union, South Carolina, he was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew him.
Eston's early years in Union laid a strong foundation for a life marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family. He was the cherished husband of Debra Johnson, who stood by his side as a partner and best friend. Although he was preceded in death by his brother Baylus Johnson, Eston's legacy continues through his loving children, David (with his wife Polly), Charles (with his wife Suzanne), and Harlan, as well as his adored grandchildren Farrah, Cody, Asheton, Jessica, Tyler, Zachery, Cole, and Forrest, and his seventeen great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride.
Professionally, Eston was a respected radio and TV broadcaster, a career that showcased his intelligence, wit, and the warm timbre of his voice that could both inform and comfort listeners. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to be involved in various businesses, where his sharp mind and humor were equally appreciated.
Eston's interests were as rich and varied as his character. He was an avid golfer, relishing the quiet concentration of the game and the camaraderie of fellow golfers. His love for football was matched only by his passion for anything that involved his family, with whom he shared his most cherished moments.
Those who knew Eston will remember him as a loving family man, an intelligent guide, and a source of endless humor. His ability to light up a room with his funny anecdotes and genuine interest in others will be deeply missed.
Eston's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and laughter. He leaves behind a legacy of joy and kindness that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to Charles Eston Johnson, Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived and a man dearly loved.
