David Shipley, 69, passed away peacefully, August 13, 2024, at his home in Cresaptown, MD, where he had lived for close to 40 years.
He was born June 1, 1955, in
Cumberland, MD to the late Raymond H. Shipley, Sr. and Miriam P. Shipley.
David graduated from Allegany Highschool in 1973 and later graduated from Frostburg State University with a degree in accounting. During college, he worked as a night janitor for the Maryland Department of Transportation (State Roads), upon graduation he continued his service to the state of Maryland as a Tax Auditor with the Department of Labor. He was highly respected in his field and sought after for his expertise and advice by auditors throughout the state of Maryland. Many of the processes he developed are still in use today. He took a special interest in learning and understanding revenue tax law, as a result, he never lost a case. He retired after 33 years of faithful service to the state, graciously passing on his knowledge to junior auditors.
He retired relatively early at 53, and eagerly played the role as Mr. Mom to Hallie, allowing Amy to pursue her career. He had also been a single father for many years to Tiffany. His daughters were his world, always putting them first.
David had many hobbies, most of them involving nature. He loved to go camping, hiking, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and meticulously planning vacations. He passed on his love of nature to his children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was a kind, authentic, and honest soul, sensitive more than most, and always knew the right thing to say. He had many friends who cherished these qualities.
He was proudest of his family and leaves behind his wife, Amy Shipley; daughters and sons-in-law, Tiffany and Leroy Mitchell of Cresaptown, Hallie and Bing Liu of Baltimore; his granddaughter, Abbigail Mitchell of Cumberland; his grandson, Ryan Mitchell of Cresaptown; his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond H. Shipley, Jr. and Marie Shipley; his sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Bill Chadwick; nieces, Meagan Shipley and Sara McGregor; and nephews, David Chadwick and Bobby Chadwick. He also leaves behind his special girl Murphy, his Australian shepherd who he loved so much.
His wife, the love of his life, Amy, took the best care of him in his final weeks and days, ensuring all his wishes were carried out to the finest detail. He told her often how well she cared for him and thanked her continuously.
The family is thankful for the kindness and care provided by the UPMC Hospice staff in his final days.
According to his wishes he will be cremated; there will not be a formal ceremony, a private celebration of life will be planned for close family and friends in the near future.
He will be missed beyond measure, baby run!
