David J. Whorton passed away peacefully in his home in Las Vegas on October 13, 2024. David was born on October 6, 1952 in Las Vegas, the son of Richard "Dick" Whorton and Rachel S. Whorton. The Whortons were the proprietors for many years of Whorton's Food Market located at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Seventh Street. Like all the Whorton children, David spent many hours helping his parents in the store.
David graduated from Robertson High School, and after graduation, he traveled to Israel and spent time working on a Kubutz. He returned to Las Vegas after his Israelis venture, found work in the construction trades. He spent many years working for a company who built custom log homes. Due to a work-related injury, he was forced to give up construction. He then enrolled at Highlands University and earned a bachelors degree in Political Science. Around the same time, he met an individual who ran a ranch in the area. Besides ranching, he led excursions into the Pecos wilderness for tourists who wanted a real wild west adventure. David signed on to assist with the excursions which allowed him to be around one of his loves in life, horses. Unfortunately, the rancher suffered a premature death which ended this phase of David's life adventure. He rounded out his career as an employee of the Highland's University Maintenance Department. David was never married and had no children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jerry and Don. He is survived by his brother Bob and wife Juneen of Los Lunas, NM; sister-in-law Sandy of Lakewood, CO; sister-in-law Diana of Oakland, CA, and eight nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 29, 2024 at 11:00 am at Rogers Mortuary Chapel in Las Vegas, NM with Pastor James Vaughn officiating. Interment of cremains will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Las Vegas, NM.
Arrangements are entrusted to and under the care of Rogers Mortuary, 600 Reynolds Ave., Las Vegas, NM 87701, 505-425-3511 or 1-800-479-3511.

I send all my sincere condolences. I feel I failed David, in that I didn't keep up with him. Our last visit was at his 50 reunion, which was moved to 2022. We had a good time talking. I have known David since first grade! We even were roommates when we went to UNM... imagine that. I pray David's memory is a blessing to you all, and that he was peaceful. So sorry.

David was a kind, generous person, and accepting person. I would say non-judgmental. I guess we used to talk periodically even though he was an upper-classman and didn't look down on me. On the day I decided to take my driver's test in 1970, I asked David if he would lend me his big white American car to take the driver's test; I figured my parents wouldn't let me borrow theirs. There wasn't any hesitation with David, he just said, "Sure, if you could parallel park that boat, you could park anything." I did it! Didn't wreck David's boat in the process. What a lovely gentleman! Wish I would have stayed in contact.

David and I were buddies from first grade through elementary school. Our neighborhoods and the store were our playgrounds. We weren´t real close in high school but reconnected at Highlands and shared some good friends there as well. I´ll miss running into him around town. He was a good guy.
