Dennis Warren McCardell, 80, of Conowingo, MD, passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025. Born on March 4, 1945, in Havre de Grace, MD, he was the beloved son of the late Ralph Ernest and Cornelia Lanocka McCardell.
Dennis dedicated 25 years of his life to the Maryland State Police, retiring with the rank of Corporal. His commitment to service extended to the Maryland Army National Guard, where he served for 39 years and retired as a Master Sergeant. During his time in the Army National Guard, Dennis was honored with multiple decorations, including the Army Soldiers Medal for Valor and the Maryland Distinguished Service Cross with Valor, as well as the Army Commendation Medal. These honors were awarded for his courageous rescue operations in Port Deposit during Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
A devoted attendee of Mt. Pleasant Church in Colora, MD, Dennis was also an active member of Harmony Lodge No. 53 in Port Deposit, MD, and the American Legion Post No. 297 in Baltimore, MD. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Nancy Jane McCardell; his sons, Jason Edwin McCardell and James Warren McCardell; his daughters, Heather Renae Braune, Stacy Lynn McCardell, and Teresa Lyn Barton; and ten cherished grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard McCardell, Ralph Alan McCardell, and Timothy McCardell; and his sister, Marlene Shires.
Dennis will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his country. His legacy of service and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guiding Eyes or Tunnels to Towers Foundation in care of Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., P.O. Box 766, Perryville, MD 21903-0766.
A Memorial Service has been scheduled for Sunday, October 26, 2025, 3 PM, at the Mt. Pleasant Church of Colora, MD. Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, October 26, 2025, 2 pm until 3 pm, at the church prior to the funeral service. Pastor David Burke of Mt. Pleasant will officiate. Interment will be private.
