In Loving Memory of Michelle Susan Caires January 15, 1983 – September 9, 2025

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Michelle Susan Caires, age 42-a woman of remarkable intelligence, talent, and heart-who left us far too soon after a lifelong battle with type one diabetes.

Born in Oakland, California, Michelle was a force of nature: curious, creative, and deeply empathetic. Her gifts were many-an incisive mind, a flair for storytelling, and a soul that radiated warmth and compassion. She brought light to every room and depth to every conversation.

Michelle is survived by her devoted parents, Timothy and Debra Caires (née Lucas); her loving brother Michael and his wife RaeAnne; her cherished niece and nephew; her uncle and several cousins; and her beloved dog, Mooshoo, who remains a source of comfort to her family. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Barbara and James Lucas; her paternal grandmother, Barbara Young; her Aunt Elizabeth Strohmier; and her cousin, Patrick Michael Caires. Their memory remained close to Michelle's heart throughout her life.

Michelle's educational journey began at Our Lady of Grace Grammer School in Castro Valley, followed by Castro Valley High School. She continued her studies at Los Positas College in Livermore and later earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with Honors from San Francisco State University. She went on to become a licensed phlebotomist and medical assistant, combining her intellectual rigor with a deep desire to help others.

Outside of her professional life, Michelle embraced joy and movement. She found strength in boxing, serenity at the beach, and delight in collecting sea glass. Dancing was another of her passions-an expression of her vibrant energy and love for life.

From an early age, Michelle faced the relentless challenges of type one diabetes. She met them with courage, grace, and determination, never allowing the disease to define her spirit. Though the toll became too great after decades of struggle, she fought bravely until the end. Michelle never lost her dignity, her kindness, or her fierce love for those around her.

She was a cherished friend and colleague to many-someone who listened deeply, loved generously, and gave freely of herself. Her legacy is one of quiet strength, creative brilliance, and unwavering compassion.

A memorial service will be held by the family on October 17 at 9:00 AM at Holy Sepulchre, located at 1051 Harder Road, Hayward, California. Please respect the family's request for a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes, NorCal Chapter, in honor of Michelle's lifelong journey and advocacy.
