Dorothy Abrams died peacefully in her home in Minnetonka, Minnesota on April 21, 2024 just a few days shy of her 97th birthday. She is survived by her son David (Audrey) and grandchildren Rachel (Claire Steinhoff) and Sal Abrams. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents Katherine and Sidney Cohn, brother Eugene (Dorothy) Cohn, sister Anne (Harry) Werner, husband Arthur, and daughters Judith Abrams and Janet (Gene) Karoscik. She was a long-time resident of Westport, Connecticut having lived there from 1963 until she moved to Minnesota in 2010 to be close to David and his family. She taught arithmetic at Kathleen Laycock Country Day School (now Greens Farms Academy), Roton Middle School, and Norwalk High School before retiring to an active life of volunteerism and travel. Dorothy was an active member of the Westport Women's Club, the Nature Conservancy's Devils Den Ordway Nature Preserve in Weston, Connecticut, and tutored students in the Bridgeport Connecticut school system. She also served as an election judge in Westport. Dorothy and her family were long time members of Temple Israel in Westport where she served for years on the Social Action and Caring Committees. She became an Elder of sorts on those two committees, sharing her institutional memory of the previous decades and guiding younger members as they led the congregation down paths of justice and comfort. Dorothy will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, caring friend, devoted grandmother, and "that lady who always made sure to go for a dip at Compo Beach by Memorial Day". Long Island Sound was very much her happy place for her entire life. Donations may be made, in leu of flowers, to the Fairfield County Chapter of the Nature Conservancy or to your local food shelf.
