Elaine M. Stevens, age 73 of Vernon, passed away on Thursday, October 16th, 2025, at the Newton Medical Center.
Born in Paterson to Marion (Hoffman) and the late Richard Ashton, Elaine grew up in Passaic County and lived in Clifton, before settling in Vernon almost 20 years ago. For many years Elaine worked as a bakery manager for A&P before her retirement. Elaine enjoyed baking, decorating, and shopping, but above all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. She was also an active member of the Vernon United Methodist Church, where she was a dedicated volunteer with the clothing store and food pantry.
Predeceased by her father, Richard Ashton, and her husband, John M. Stevens, Elaine is survived by her two loving sons, Daniel Christie and wife Katherine; David Christie and wife Jennifer; four grandchildren, Nicholas Daniel Christie and Alexander Joseph Christie, Sara Lynn Touchette and Dana Lynn Christie; as well as her mother, Marion Ashton; brothers Richard and Dennis Ashton and furry best friend, Sadie Rose.
A visitation for Elaine will be held on Tuesday, October 21st, 2025, from 5:00 - 9:00 PM at the Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home, (One Vanderhoof Court for GPS) 241 Route 94, Vernon, NJ 07462. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 22nd, 10:00 AM at the Vernon United Methodist Church. Burial in the Glenwood Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Vernon United Methodist Church (vernonumc.org).
