Elizabeth Johnson, beloved wife and mother, of Shalimar, Florida, passed on Wednesday September 4, 2024.
She was born in Union Springs, Alabama in April of 1944 to Annie Carroll Jackson and George Jackson. Elizabeth graduated High School before attaining an AA in Child Development and working as a teacher at CDC on Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
Elizabeth's lifelong devotion was that of a loving wife to husband, George I. Johnson Jr., United States Air Force (Ret) and beloved mom to 5 children: Jacqueline Devonne Johnson-Patterson, Gwendolyn Marie Johnson-Hilliard, Sharon Denice Johnson, Gino Johnson, George Ivory Johnson III and son-in-love Stevens T. Hilliard SFC-E7 (Ret), 1 grand daughter: Shawana Devonne Johnson, 8 great grandchildren: Derion Johnson-Carter, Michalle Johnson-Carter- Childers, Mikeal Johnson-Carter, Gabriele Johnson, Mark Johnson-Foresta, Ethan Johnson-Foresta, Isaiah Johnson and Dakota Johnson, 3 great great grandchildren: Aleena Johnson-Knox, Nova Childers and Phoenix Childers.
Her journey as a military spouse began in the early 1960s after marrying the love of her life, George I. Johnson Jr, who was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The couple was blessed with daughters Jacqueline, Gwendolyn and Sharon, while stationed at Eglin AFB before moving to Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska where son, Gino, was born. The next base was Kincheloe Air Force Base, Michigan followed by the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado where they welcomed their 2nd son, George III, to the family. From there, the entire Johnson family of 7 moved to the exotic islands of the Philippines calling Clark Air Base home for the next 3 years. The final destination as active duty was Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico where granddaughter, Shawana, was born. New Mexico is also where her daughter, Gwendolyn, first met her future husband Stevens. Elizabeth's travels as a military spouse came full circle in 1980 when her husband, George, retired and returned to the Eglin Air Force Base/ Ft. Walton Beach community. The family soon became a part of the Eglin AFB East Gate Chapel Gospel Service family and focused on settling into the Emerald Coast lifestyle of family, community and fun in the sun. 17 years later, Elizabeth graciously welcomed the addition of 8 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren whose names are listed in the previous paragraph.
Elizabeth was a beautiful, elegant and quintessential wife, mom, daughter, sister, cousin and friend. All who knew her would surly agree the words of Proverbs 31:10-31 best exemplify Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson.
Proverbs 31:10-31
A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. Never spiteful, she treats him generously all her life long. She shops around for the best yarns and cottons, and enjoys knitting and sewing. She's like a trading ship that sails to faraway places and brings back exotic surprises. She's up before dawn, preparing breakfast for her family and organizing her day. She looks over a field and buys it, then, with money she's put aside, plants a garden. First thing in the morning, she dresses for work, rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started. She senses the worth of her work, is in no hurry to call it quits for the day. She's skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking. She's quick to assist anyone in need; she reaches out to help the poor. She doesn't worry about her family when it snows; their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear. She makes her own clothing, and dresses in colorful linens and silks. Her husband is greatly respected when he deliberates with the city fathers. She designs gowns and sells them; she brings the sweaters she knits to the dress shops. Her clothes are well-made and elegant, and she always faces tomorrow with a smile. When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly. She keeps an eye on everyone in her household, and keeps them all busy and productive. Her children respect and bless her; her husband joins in with words of praise: "Many women have done wonderful things, but you've outclassed them all!" Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades, but the woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God. Give her everything she deserves! Adorn her life with praises!
