Elmer H Zinniel, of Alexandria, MN, passed away at the age of 94 on October 7, 2024, at Alomere Health in Alexandria MN. Elmer was born on April 21, 1930, in Stearns County, MN, and later enlisted in the United States Army, serving for two years in Fayetteville, NC with the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper.

At a dance, he met the love of his life, Fern Stroman. Fern always said, “It all started with a dance.” Elmer and Fern were inseparable, and were married on June 2, 1952, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, MN. Elmer and Fern settled in Coon Rapids where together they raised their children. Elmer was a member of the Coon Rapids American Legion. After spending many years working as a truck driver for companies like Twin City Brick Co and Smith Sharp Company, Elmer retired in 1992. Elmer and Fern enjoyed a well-deserved retirement in Alexandria, MN, where he indulged in his passions for fishing, yard work, gardening and spending time with his family.

A man with a great sense of humor and a love for his family above all else. He was known for his infectious sense of humor and unwavering support for the Minnesota Twins “Go Twins!!”.

Elmer’s memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and those whose lives he touched.

Elmer is survived by his loving children, Ronald Zinniel (Joe Riege) of Roseville, David Zinniel (Jacque) of Blaine, Carol Johnsen of Rochester, Donna Schmit (Rick) of Maple Grove, and Julie Best (Tom) of Sandstone; daughter in law Debbie Zinniel, 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and his brothers in-law, Curtis Stroman (Marcia) and Merle Johnson. Elmer was preceded in death by wife Fern Zinniel, his “angel grandson” David Ross Best; his parents Raymond and Anna; brother LaVern Zinniel; sisters Beata Zinniel, Ida Click, Illa Swanson and Virginia Johnson.

A private Memorial Service for immediate family will be held Friday, October 18, 2024, at 3 PM at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Camp Ripley with Military Honors accorded by Camp Ripley Honor Guard.
