Estel Eugene (Gene) Joan, age 77, passed away at home on February 6th, 2025, in Hale, MI. He was born on August 16th, 1947, to Elsa (Owens) Hunter in Columbus, OH. After graduating from high school, Gene joined the United Sates Navy where he proudly served his country for 3 tours in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged, Gene worked as a meter reader for Consumer's Energy for 15 years. He married Karen Gayle Hebbeler on July 28, 1984. Although he had a medical event causing his leg to be amputated, Gene continued to enjoy playing and watching golf, gardening, listening to traditional country music like Hank Williams and Patsy Cline. He was a diehard Buckeye and Browns fan.
Gene is survived by his daughter Jennifer Joan of Hale, sister; Nora (Marvin) Barker of Columbus, OH, half-sisters; Diana Reynolds of Syracuse, NY, and Linda Shephard of Galion, OH, nieces and nephews; Brandy (Rick) McQuay, and Sherry Barker, William Bevens III, Rachael Bevens. In addition to his wife Karen, he is preceded in death by his mother Elsa, his brother Bill, and his stepfather Irv. Per Gene's request cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.
