On Friday, October 25, 2024, Mrs. Evelyn Walker Steele answered God's gentle call and left her earthly vessel to reign eternally with the Lord.
Evelyn was born on March 15, 1928, in Cabarrus County to the late Mark Walker and Mary Winecoff Walker. She was educated in Cabarrus County Schools attending Morehead School, Rockhill School and Logan High School where she graduated with the Class of 1946.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Andrew Alexander Steele, Jr. and sons Donald Steele and Larry Steele; Siblings Sylvester Walker, Walter William Walker, Sam Franklin Walker, James (JD) Walker, Novella Walker, Irene Walker Gray, Mary Elizabeth Walker Misenheimer and Eva Mae Walker Caldwell.
Evelyn, during her early teenage years, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized and joined the Holly Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Later in her adult life she became a member of the Rock Hill African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church where she was faithful and very supportive of the church's missions. She was a Life Matron in the Life Members Council of The Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society, President of the Young Businesswomen's Club (YBW), a Consecrated Deaconess serving as President of the Deaconess Board for twenty plus years, and member of the Waves of Zion Chorus. Her employment over the years included Morton Frozen Foods, Concord NC, Cannon Mills Plant 1, Kannapolis NC, and domestic work for the late Dr. Ladd Watts Jr. and Sarah Hamrick, Concord NC, and Attorney Paul and Meridith Bell, Charlotte NC. She devoted herself to her family and enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners including her specialties of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and sweet potato pies. She enjoyed watching the televised church services of the First Presbyterian Church, Charlotte NC and her favorite TV shows which included the soaps (General Hospital, Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful), and game shows.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories a daughter, Linda Steele (Bobby) Smith of
Concord, NC; sons Michael Angelo Steele,
Concord, NC, Tyrone (Phyllis) Steele, Charlotte NC, Andre Stefon (Amy) Steele, Albemarle NC; granddaughters – Chandra Steele (Shawn) Sprouse, Archer Lodge, NC, and Chantal Denise Smith, Waynesboro, VA; great grandson, Miles Christopher Smith, Concord NC; and great great grand daughter, Blake Dolan Smith, Goodyear, AZ. Special bonus grandsons Eddie Layton, Caleb Layton of Matthew, NC, and Jacob Layton (Nikki) of Quebec, Canada, and a bonus special great grandson Erik Layton Matthew, NC.
Additional bonus family members include four grands, fourteen great grand and three great great grands; Brother, Mart Eugene (Betty) Walker, Kannapolis NC; Sisters-In-Law Catherine Elnora Walker, Alice Steele-Robinson (Harold) and Joyce Steele Caldwell all of
Concord, NC. and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Funeral arrangements are scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2024 at Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church located at 3620 Rock Hill Church Rd. in Concord. The visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. - 1:00 P.M. followed by the funeral service at 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Lamb Funeral Home Inc. will be serving the family.
