Fernando "Cano" Roman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed away on October 20th, 2024, in Chicago, where he was born on July 3rd, 1970. Cano was a warrior in every sense of the word, with remarkable strength and unwavering perseverance throughout his life. He grew up in Humboldt Park as sibling number five out of six to a single mother.

Cano will be remembered fondly for his vibrant personality and infectious laughter. He had a unique ability to make those feel welcome and like family and bring joy to any gathering, making him the quintessential life of the party. He cherished storytelling, captivating his audience with tales that made people laugh and feel connected. His engaging spirit and strong will made every moment spent with him a treasured memory.

A proud family man, Cano dedicated himself to placing his loved ones first. His greatest pride came from witnessing his family's successes. He reveled in the joy of being a grandfather to his grandson Danilo, taking immense delight in every interaction. His legacy lies in the love he shared and the values he instilled in his children, Avelyss Diamond (Josue) and Fernando Anthony Jr. ("Iza" Izabella), and his fur baby, Maxwell, "Maxx," who carry forward his spirit of resilience and devotion.

Beyond his love for family, Cano was passionate about sports, particularly baseball and football. He found joy in fishing and frequently took the opportunity to travel with his family, creating lasting bonds and memories during those cherished trips.

He is survived by his loving partner of 31 years, Edna "Ivy" Gonzalez, who stood by his side through every trial and triumph. Cano is also survived by his brothers Felix M Rosa, Luis Rosa (Magdalena), Pedro Perez (Zoraida), Jose A Jimenez, Andres Roman Jr. (Jezel), and his "brother" Merilan Zarsadias (Gerardo), as well as countless cousins, nieces, and nephews. Though both of his parents have passed, their spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

As we bid farewell to Cano, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and an unyielding spirit. He will be profoundly missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift us all.

In place of flowers and monetary gifts, we ask that you please honor Fernando's legacy by donating to the Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome Network, Inc. to support further research in hopes of finding a cure.

Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by albinism, visual impairment, and a tendency to bleed due to platelet dysfunction, often accompanied by pulmonary fibrosis and other organ complications. HPS is extremely rare, occurring in approximately 1 in 500,000 to 1 in 1,000,000 individuals, with higher prevalence in certain populations, such as those of Puerto Rican descent.
