Memorial services for Flor Salguero Knowles, age 98, of Greenville will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 11at Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. She died Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Delta Health-The Medical Center.
Flor was born on April 1, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah and lived in El Paso Texas, until she left to attend Drake University in Des Moine, Iowa. Following graduation and the end of World War II, she married Carter L. Knowles of Greenville, Mississippi and lived the rest of her life in Greenville. She was active in the community, First United Methodist Church as a member, and in art education. She taught elementary school art for 15 years, served as art supervisor for 5 years, and art coordinator for 5 years in grades K – 12. She completed her Masters Degree at Delta State University and was named Outstanding Art Educator of the Year for the 1986-87 school year. One of her art pieces, a macrame wall hanging, was displayed in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. She retired after 30 years of service in art education. During ten of her retirement years, she taught extension courses for Delta State University and Mississippi Delta Community College.
She served as a past president of the Greenville Education Association, past Secretary-Treasurer and Director of the Elementary Division of the Mississippi Art Education for the Mississippi Art Education Association. She was an active member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, past president of the Delta Newcomers Club, the Colonial Garden Club, and the Woman's Federated Club of Greenville. She was a past board member of the Delta Children's Museum and continued to serve on the board of the Greenville Educational Credit Union until her death. She was a past member of the Greenville Pride committee. As an active member of First United Methodist Church, she served as a Bible Study leader, an area chairman for missions, and as president of the Board of Directors.
In spite of teaching and her advocacy for art education and involvement in community projects and activities, she always made time for bridge, participating in a bridge club of like minded friends from her early days as a newlywed until just a few years prior to her death.
She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur R. Salguero; her mother, Edith May White Salguero; her stepmother, Ann Salguero; her aunt, Leila Philleo; her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Luetta Salguero; her husband, Carter Lindsay Knowles; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Norma Hinman and Carter L. Knowles, Sr.; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elaine Knowles and Archie Mullens; and brothers-in law, Berkley Knowles and Donald Knowles and sister-in-law, Charleen Salguero.
