Freda Eloise Parsons passed away peacefully at the age of 102 on October 16, 2024, at Prestige Care Center in Fairfield, Iowa. Born on April 15, 1922, in rural Libertyville, Freda was a cherished daughter of Frank Clinton and Bertha Jewel Greenfield Riggs. Her early life on the family farm and education at the local country school laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and family values.
Freda's journey through life was marked by her enduring love and commitment to family. After graduating from Douds-Leando High School in 1940, she married her beloved Donald Parsons on April 12, 1941, in Memphis, Missouri. In the initial years of their marriage, she balanced the responsibilities of raising children with the demands of farm life. Together with Donald, she co-ran Don's Market in Leando for a few years before venturing into employment at various department stores, where she especially enjoyed working in the fabric area,
Retirement for Freda was not a time for slowing down but rather a new chapter where she could fully embrace her role as a grandmother. Her grandchildren became the focal point of her life, and she dedicated her time to their care and upbringing. Freda's independence and nurturing spirit were evident in every aspect of her life, particularly in the love and care she provided to her family and friends.
An artisan in her own right, Freda was renowned for her exquisite crocheting skills like making afghans for her grandchildren and lots of doilies. Over her lifetime, she also created more than 1,000 crocheted last names, bestowing these personalized gifts upon many fortunate recipients. Her talents extended beyond the craft table, as she found joy in playing cards with the local ladies of Fairfield and Douds. Freda was also an active member of the Libertyville Travelers, enjoying the camaraderie and adventure that came with exploring new places. The Iowa State Fair held a special place in her heart, where she created many cherished memories.
Freda's legacy is carried on by her loving family. She leaves behind a son, Donald Parsons (Ricci) of Fountain Hills, Arizona; two daughters, Judy Fellows (Ted) and Janice Johnston (Carroll), all of Douds; and two nephews, Ralph (Jessie) Caves and Frank (Dinna) Caves, also of Douds. Her life was further enriched by her ten grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren. Freda was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, and her two sisters, Beulah Caves and Eveleen Davis.
