Gary Timothy Carpenter passed away at his home in Troy on October 24, 2024, at the age of 77. Gary was born on September 28, 1947, in Pontiac, Michigan, to the late Donald and Elizabeth Carpenter (nee Karwoski). He graduated from Troy High School in 1965.
In October 1966, Gary answered the call of duty and was drafted into the U.S. Army. Serving honorably for two years, including one year in Vietnam, Gary held the rank of SP4 and served as a Power Plant Operator Mechanic (52B20) in Battery B, 3rd Battalion, 43rd Artillery in Swedesboro, NJ. His service exemplified dedication, resilience, and patriotism.
Upon returning home, Gary pursued an apprenticeship and, in 1972, became certified, beginning a distinguished career as a heavy equipment operator with the Local 324. His work and commitment to his trade left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the projects he took part in over the years.
Gary's true joy came from the simple pleasures in life, particularly in the beauty of the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter of small game, a keen fisherman, and loved to travel to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, immersing himself in the region's natural splendor. At home, Gary enjoyed the quiet challenge of crossword puzzles, word searches, and playing computer games, all of which offered relaxation while keeping his mind sharp.
Gary is survived by his children, Susan Burgess (Brett) and Daniel Carpenter (Kasey), grandchildren, Brandon Bollman (Nina), Zack Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and great grandson Brayden. He is also survived by his sisters, Gail Strochein, Peggy Madak, and brothers, Scot Carpenter and Andy Carpenter.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Kreper, his parents, and his sister, Sally Thomas.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorial tributes are suggested to Disabled American Veterans.
