Born in Portland, Oregon on June 25, 1929, just a few months before the stock market crashed at the beginning of the Great Depression, Geraldine Ann Schindler grew up raised by a single mother Lillian Schmidt. After spending a few years in Iowa with family, they moved to Los Angeles in 1932.
Having no siblings, she developed a strong relationship with her maternal Grandmother, Elizabeth Seher Schmidt who came to visit Jeri and her mother in LA and instilled in her a strong sense of family. Jeri's interest in language was nurtured by her grandmother; Jeri was always fascinated by language and studied Latin in High School and English at Cal State LA. Ultimately Jeri became about half fluent in Spanish.
Jeri and John Robert Schindler married in 1950 and spent the next 60 years together. Jeri was a true partner with John; they discussed every decision, shared their approach to raising children, and planned many adventures including flying, sailing, traveling, water skiing and motorcycle rides. Together they raised three boys: Gar Paul, Mark Allen and Jay Robert.
John retired from the Los Angeles Fire Department and they moved to Klamath Falls in the early 70s. John and Jeri started a metal fabrication business in Klamath Falls that for many years served the farming and lumber communities as well as anyone who needed something fixed. That business is still in operation.
After retirement, they began wandering the country in their converted bus; to Oshkosh for the Air Venture, Reno for the Air Races, (where Jeri authored articles for the Herald and News) and across the country visiting our widespread family on the East Coast. They welcomed their Granddaughter Hanna in Virginia and later their Grandson Hayden in Tucson.
Throughout her life, God was present in her heart and in her demeanor. Rare was the occasion that she allowed circumstances to dictate her actions. She remained in control with Gods guidance and with a purity of spirit to which we all aspire.
