BRUNSWICK - Helen D. Hodgkin, 85, a resilient and determined spouse, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 4, 2024. Born in Needham, MA on August 15, 1939, Helen 's life was a testament to unwavering strength, as she faced every challenge with grace and determination. Helen carried a loving heart and a loyalty to her family that knew no bounds. Her creativity found expression in her passion for reading, and especially in her love of creative writing; during her years of raising children, she would often rise early before the rest of the household so that she could get in some writing before the chaos of raising four children took over her day.
Helen spent her professional life serving as a dedicated teacher, specializing in early childhood and special education. She began her career teaching in Littleton, New Hampshire and Veazie, Maine. Helen and her husband, Irving Hodgkin, started their family in New Jersey and then subsequently lived in Ellsworth, Maine for many years, raising their three sons and daughter in an active, and musical home. She was a devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth and lived her faith through her actions. She loved her kids and family beyond measure, revealing her deep capacity for love in every interaction.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Doris Tibbetts, and is survived by her loving husband, Irving Hodgkin and her children, Dana Hodgkin, Barry Hodgkin, Deborah Hodgkin, and Stephen Hodgkin. She was a proud grandmother, with seven grandchildren and a great granddaughter.
Helen's life will be celebrated with a visitation service on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal Street, Brunswick, Maine. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, 2 Church Street, Ellsworth, Maine. Her committal service will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Clough Cemetery in Lewiston, Maine.
May her resilient spirit, loving nature, loyalty, and creativity continue to inspire us as we remember and celebrate her life.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Stetson's Funeral Home website, www.stetsonsfuneralhome.com.
