Mark Dennis passed away peacefully at home in Monroe, Louisiana, on January 6, 2025, at the age of 61, after a months-long illness. Born on June 8, 1963, Mark lived a life full of adventure, reflection, and deep connection to those around him.
Mark grew up on Valencia Street in Monroe, Louisiana, surrounded by family, cousins, and friends. His childhood was filled with swimming in Phillips Bayou, riding bikes in the Jumps and behind the levee, and weekends at the Potluck Hunting Club with family, where he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors. Mark's cousins recall those years as a time of freedom and laughter, with Monroe as a place of joy and belonging, where Mark and his family were at the center of it all.
Later, the family moved to Slidell when his father became a State Supreme Court Justice. There, Mark's charisma, fearless nature, and playful energy earned him the nickname "The Snake," a moniker as legendary as his performances on the football field. Even weeks before his death, family members would encounter people who fondly remembered him from those years and say, "Oh, wow, you're related to the Snake?"
Mark's adventurous spirit shaped his life and career. He embraced rugged and varied work, from offshore oil rigs and tugboats to Alaskan fisheries and cherry-picking in Washington State. Eventually, he found his calling as a landscaper and master gardener in Baton Rouge and Monroe.
Mark was particularly proud of reclaiming and beautifying the area adjoining Bayou DeSiard at Northminster Church in Monroe. Under his care, the once-overgrown space became a peaceful and welcoming retreat for parishioners. His efforts reflected his skills and his dedication to creating spaces that fostered connection and serenity.
Deeply thoughtful and spiritual, Mark was an avid reader who sought wisdom and insight in books spanning poetry, philosophy, history, and psychology. He immersed himself in the works of Whitman, Blake, Emerson, Thoreau, Jung, and others, often sharing passages and quotes that moved him. Mark also wrote poetry and reflected deeply on society, history, and spirituality, quietly striving to live honestly and intentionally. His love of learning and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate to know him.
Mark was a recovering alcoholic who celebrated over 20 years of sobriety. His journey inspired him to mentor and support others on similar paths, offering compassion and wisdom. Mark had a gift for knowing when someone needed help, often showing up to hold a hand, offer a prayer, or be present during life's most challenging moments.
Mark's cousins remember him as a loyal protector and a kind, free-spirited soul. "Mark was something to know," one cousin shared. "He had a wild streak but was such a loving, kind soul. I will always remember the time we spent growing up together–tramping through mud and water in the 'Coot,' laughing, and finding joy in every moment. He was my protector and will always be. Fly high, Mark."
Mark is survived by his mother, Camille Dennis Peterson, and her husband, Al Peterson; his father, Judge James L. Dennis, and his wife, Judy Dennis; his brothers, Stephen Dennis and his wife, Gail Gennaro, and Tim Dennis and his partner, Joohee Lee; and his niece and nephew, Sydney and Zach Dennis. His cat, Kitty, was his constant companion. Mark now joins his brother Greg; his grandmother, Nanny; and his aunts, Mary Sue Chambers and Alice Smith, in eternal peace.
Mark will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, humor, and the genuine care he showed to everyone in his life. His laughter, unwavering loyalty, and his steadfast support in times of need will be remembered with love. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
