Inez Pittman Walter, affectionately known to both friends and family simply as "grandma", was welcomed with a riotous praise into her heavenly home on Friday, September 20th of 2024.The praise, heard this side of heaven by her daughters, erupted as she took her final breaths and a neighbor began to serenade her ascent with his trumpet in the yard nearby. Not known for being the center of attention, her exit was ironically captured with passionate jazz and a shared special date: her daughter's birthday; proving that a new outlook on life can indeed still come from death.
Grandma, born June 22nd, 1940, is now united with her husband, James "Jay" Walter. She survived her parents, Thomas and Willie Pearl Pittman, as well as two of her three brothers, Charles and Tom Pittman. She leaves behind her third older brother, James.
Youngest of four kids and the only girl, Inez followed in her parent's footsteps, but in reverse, bearing four beautiful children- three girls to only one boy: (in birth order) David Rabon, Sarah Parker, Linda Rose, and Denese Forkkio.
All of her children still alive to celebrate her life, Grandma also left behind a myriad of rosy-faced children: boasting 11 grandchildren and a remarkable 13 great-grandchildren.
Although she loved the slow nature of her crochet, she still flaunted the title of "the fun grandmother", remembered now fondly as being excitable and feisty, going as far as to learning how to play video games with the littles and breaking out the scary movies to rile them up before bed (as every good grandmother does) before sending them back home to mom and dad.
Scary movies aside, she was known as a protector and an advocate for her family, leaving one grandchild to remark that his life was not only saved, but forever changed because of her support and boldness to speak up.
Her tenacity and spunk in fighting for her place as the youngest and only girl in her family was passed on to her daughters, encouraging them to be independent, change tires on their own, and in Linda's words, "live a life without a man".
This blend of lovable and scrappy made Grandma, Grandma, and our lives will not be the same without her.
Her legacy is continued through the success of the generations that Inez brought forth, condensed now to just a few notable stories: ones like her daughter Denese, a compassionate and steadfast missionary who devoted years of her life to serving in Papua New Guinea; her grandson, Daniel Forkkio who now runs a nonprofit for helping former felons gain access to resources by rewriting the narrative surrounding incarceration; and her great grandson, Ian Rabon, who achieved one of the most esteemed successes for someone of his age- getting offered an full ride academic scholarship to Hanover College.
Grandma paved the way for her children, her children's children, and all that come after to have a better life than she did. She worked hard, fought harder, and did the best that she could to give the future generations what she truly believed that they deserved.
