Jack Rath Obituary

John “Jack” Edward Rath was born on December 26, 1945, to Robert and Garnet (Langer) Rath in Denison, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed on Palm Sunday, March 26, 1961, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, where he remained a lifelong member.

Jack’s early education began at Washington #6 Country School, where he attended until the sixth grade. He graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1964. His passion for agriculture led him to Iowa State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business, graduating in November 1969.

Following his education Jack returned to the family farm, where he worked alongside his father, calling their partnership Rath and Son, for many years. He continued to farm the land with great pride until 2006 when he transitioned to a management role, overseeing the farm’s operations.

Jack was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a member of the National Geographic Society. His love for nature and exploration was reflected in his favorite pastimes. Jack cherished fishing trips to Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and Ontario, Canada, destinations he loved because of fond memories spent at his family’s cabins. He also enjoyed traveling, particularly trips out west to the Rocky Mountains.

Jack’s true passion was agriculture. Whether attending meetings to stay current on industry trends or out in the fields planting and harvesting, his connection to farming was unwavering. One of Jack’s favorite ways to relax was by watching Iowa Public Television and reading, pastimes he enjoyed in the quiet moments of his life.

Jack passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 16 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Anne Lurene Rath. Jack is survived by his uncle, John Langer of Denison; many cousins; and neighbors and friends. 

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, with visitation held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., all at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church.
