James Allen Van Nevel Obituary

James Allen Van Nevel, age 57 of Chesterton, IN passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 12, 2023. He was born on May 14, 1966 in South Bend, IN to Richard and Theresa (Ganser) Van Nevel.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Kristine (Barker) Van Nevel; three sons, Joshua Van Nevel, Noah Van Nevel, Caleb Van Nevel; sister, Mary (Chris) Morales; three brothers, Rich (Anita) Van Nevel, Larry Van Nevel, Joe (June) Van Nevel; sister-in-law, Janet Van Nevel; best friend, Liz (J.T. Farley) Graupner; 12 nieces and nephews; 13 great nieces and nephews; and many extended family members, many friends and coworkers. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Van Nevel; mother, Theresa Van Nevel; three brothers, Mike Van Nevel, David Van Nevel, John Van Nevel; sister-in-law, Peggy Van Nevel.
Jim graduated from Purdue University and was a teacher for 22 years at Chesterton Middle School. He was an active supporter and parent cheerleader for his son's swim teams. Jim was an avid fisherman and loved the beach. He loved the outdoors, aquariums and zoos. Jim enjoyed gardening and chip carving. He was a huge Notre Dame Football fan and supporter of everything Chesterton. Jim was a loving husband, son, brother and father. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton, IN 46304 with Fr. Jerry Schweitzer officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, IN. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jim's honor should be made to his family to sponsor many charitable ideas Jim specified to them over the past few months.
