James Boardman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Honsa Family Funeral Home on Oct. 15, 2024.
James Reed Boardman January 14, 1934 – October 8, 2024
James Reed Boardman, (Jim), passed away at the age of 90 on October 8, 2024. He lived a long and fulfilling life. If you were lucky enough to have met him, you most likely heard one or more of his stories-told with both subtlety and animation as he often spoke with his hands. Jim had a great sense of humor and an impressive memory that stayed sharp, even in his final days.
Born on January 14, 1934, in Hastings, MN, Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret (whom he affectionately called Margie), after 63 years of marriage.
Jim was drafted right out of high school to the U.S. Army and served as a Corporal and radio operator stationed in Augsburg, Germany. While on leave, he met Margie on a blind date in St. Paul while she was studying to become a nurse. Their courtship spanned two years through letters before they married on April 27, 1957. They bought their first and only home on Lakeaires Boulevard, raising three boys in a row and later surprised by the arrival of a daughter.
Jim had a distinguished 35-1/2 year career as a Technician with 3M, where his problem-solving abilities led to multiple patents. He was well-read and passionate about the history of World War II. In his spare time, he restored Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertibles and was often found working in his garage. He was a skilled wood carver, creating works of art that will remain cherished.
He and Margie loved their Airedale dogs over the years; Palmer, Dewey (Jim's admitted favorite), and Tuck. They took walks along the riverbanks of Fort Snelling and enjoyed frisbee games in the front yard.
After retiring from 3M, Jim volunteered for Shriners Childrens' Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and NPR. He stayed active, proudly walking the Maplewood Mall six days a week, from the age of 77 to just a couple of months before his passing. He was committed to maintaining his vitality and social circle with close friends that walked with him over the years.
Jim is survived by his children: Michael, Dan (Karen and daughters, Danielle, Kristine, and Katie), Jeff (Patti), and Kathy (Tim and daughter, Quinn).
Jim's life was a testament to hard work and the joy found in life's simple pleasures. He never met a stranger and enjoyed the power of everyday kindness. Jim's presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
A Visitation Gathering will be on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 from 10 – 12 PM at Honsa Family Funeral Home, 2460 East County Road E., White Bear Lake, MN. A private family interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
