John Francis Bartos of Marshfield, Massachusetts, via Long Beach, California, passed away surrounded by love on August 31, 2024. John was the loving husband of Marilyn (Lynne) Bartos. He was father to John Bartos, Jr. and his wife Mila of Washington D.C., and grandfather to their children Payton, Cade, Winn, and True. He was father to his son Matthew, wife Michelle, and grandfather to their daughter Amanda of Goleta, California. He was stepfather to Alexandra Sullivan and her husband Dr. Christopher Sullivan and grandfather to their children Noah and Phoebe of Cohasset Massachusetts. One of nine children, John leaves behind his youngest sister, Judy of Chicago and many nieces and nephews who adored their "Uncle Jack".
John was born and raised on the South side of Chicago and proudly served in the Air Force where he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command. He graduated with a degree in business from UCLA and received his degree in Jurisprudence from UCLA School of Law. He was a founding partner of Gaylord, Bartos, and Weber in Long Beach. An athlete at heart, John was a super fan and 30 year season ticket holder of UCLA football - hosting tailgates at the Rose Bowl was his specialty, and he also avidly followed the LA Angels and UCLA basketball. A recreational tennis player himself, John fostered his son John's tennis career from childhood through his captaincy of the Princeton tennis team and beyond. John was an excellent skier and was happiest on the slopes of any Colorado mountain, especially when son Matt, his "ski buddy," was by his side. In retirement John good-naturedly supported Lynne's passion for fostering and adopting racing greyhounds - it was easy to see right through his insistence that he didn't care for dogs!
John and Lynne followed Christopher and Alex to the South Shore in 2015. He made close buddies working out at the COA and at the local Starbucks where he loved to spend his free time checking out sports scores. While Southern California remained his home at heart, John adapted to being a New Englander (even watching the Pats play!) with the same energy and dedication that he invested in all he did throughout his long, happy life.
A mass for John will be held on Saturday, October 12, at 10:30 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church with a private reception to follow. John's ashes will be interred at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at a later date. Donations in John's honor may be made to the Daniel Webster Estate, 238 Webster Street, Marshfield, Massachusetts. 02050.

I had the pleasure of meeting John at Starbucks and so enjoyed picking his wisdom of all things UCLA. A true gentleman and selfless person.
