John was born on April 2, 1946, to Robert L. and Burdell I. (Baier) Jones in Carroll, Iowa. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1964 and went on to attend the Drake University College of Pharmacy, graduating with the class of 1969. Shortly after, John was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served from 1969 to 1971. During his service, he was stationed at Fort Bliss and worked in hospital pharmacies in El Paso, Texas.

After his military service, John dedicated his career to pharmacy, working at various Walgreens locations across the Des Moines metro area until his retirement in 2010.

John had a passion for cooking and was exceptionally skilled in the kitchen. He was well-known for his signature dishes, including deviled eggs, potato salad, pumpkin bars, and chicken and dumplings. John’s relaxed approach to life often meant he wasn’t in a hurry, and he was known to arrive late on occasion. However, he always showed up with a smile on his face and delicious food in his hands, ready to brighten any gathering.

John is survived by his sister Janet (Paul) Clemmensen of Urbandale, IA, two nephews, Drew (Andrea) Clemmensen of Waukee, IA, Scott (Vanessa) Clemmensen of Saratoga Springs, NY, great nieces and nephew, Taylor, Carson, Olivia, Julia, relatives and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.
