Joseph Earl Greenwald, 91, of New Brighton, MN, sadly passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 4th, 2025. Joe was born on September 14, 1933 in Dodge Center, Minnesota.
Joe was a student at Marshall High School in St. Paul, where his favorite subject was art. To help enhance his ambition to attend art school, he joined the Air Force in 1953. He specialized in props, traveling to England to work round the clock on the B-36 and B-47 bombers for the US SAC, with a short stint in Germany.
While attending the School of Associated Arts, he found the love of his life, Marie Habinck, whom he married in 1959. They bought their first and only house in New Brighton in 1963. Joe's family was especially important to him. He frequently took Marie and the children on camping and fishing trips and supported his children in school and athletics.
Joe was a successful artist, which included working in commercial art studios as a designer and illustrator then later as a freelance designer and illustrator. Following his retirement he joined several watercolor groups and continued to paint in his favorite medium, transparent watercolors.
Art was his passion, but he also enjoyed fishing and hunting grouse, pheasant, and woodcock with his dogs and his family and friends. Like his mother, Joe had a love of animals that began when he was very young. Over the years, he had dogs, rabbits, and cats.
Joe was a creative spirit who touched the lives of countless people. He was one of a kind and will be profoundly missed.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie; his parents, Henry and Gunda; his half-sister, Carley; sister, Delores; sister, Evelyn; brother, John; and sister, Mary Jane. He is survived by his children, Tom, Joan (John) Mylrea, Patty (Scott) Jaworski, and Bob; grandchildren, Jake Jaworski, Sam Jaworski, Joe Mylrea, Josh Mylrea, Amanda Greenwald, and Ryan Greenwald; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025 at Washburn-McReavy Shoreview Chapel, 515 Highway 96 West. Visitation at 10:00 am, Service at 11:00 am with luncheon to follow.
