Karla Kaye Voltmer, 80, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2024, at her home.
Karla was born on November 10, 1944, in Holt County, the daughter of Harry B. and Reve (Taylor) Dukes.
Survivors include: sister, Danielle Peters of Garden City; two nephews, Ryan (Kelsie) Lauck of Richmond and Aaron Lauck of St. Louis; great-nephew, Connor Lauck; and great-niece, Collins Lauck.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Karla was raised and educated in Craig, Missouri, graduating from Craig High School. She went on to attend Northwest Missouri State University, where she earned her degree in education. Karla began her teaching career in Texas before returning to Missouri, where she taught in Stet and later in Richmond, retiring in 2004. Even after her formal retirement, she continued to share her passion for teaching by working as a substitute teacher until 2011. Karla was a beloved Spanish teacher who left a lasting impact on her students and colleagues.
A dedicated member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Karla served as church secretary from 2013 until her recent retirement. Her faith and commitment to her community were evident in her service. Karla loved to sing and play the piano. She was also a member of the choir at church.
Karla had a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews, whom she treated as the children she never had. Her love for animals was equally profound; she cared deeply for her cat, Baby, and was always ready with treats for neighborhood animals, including the "neph dogs" she adored.
In her leisure time, Karla found joy in reading cozy mysteries and listening to the music of Neil Diamond. Her kind spirit, love for family, and deep connection to her community and furry friends will be dearly missed.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Karla Voltmer Memorial Fund. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.
Visitation with funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 9:30 A.M., with services to follow at 10:30 A.M. Interment will be at 2:30 P.M. in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near Fairfax, following services. Please remember to share your memories of Karla with the family by visiting www.thurmanfuneralhome.com.
