Kay Lynn Scheck, age 67, of Russell, Kansas passed away on September 24, 2024 at HaysMed. She was born on December 28, 1956, in Russell to Nathan and Dorothy (Anderson) Karst. She met Everett “Butch” Hupfer and they made a life together for over thirty years. Butch preceded her in death on May 13, 2023.
Kay graduated from Gorham High School. Over the years, she became well-known as a cook at the Elks Lodge and Waudby's in Russell. Beyond her professional life, Kay had a myriad of hobbies that reflected her vibrant personality. She enjoyed fishing, baking, painting, playing bingo and engaging in various crafts. A passionate reader, Kay also loved "junking" at area sales, often turning her finds into treasures. Most treasured of all were the moments she spent with her grandchildren, who brought immense joy and fulfillment to her life.
Kay is survived by her son, Clint Hejny (Jevon) of Russell, KS; daughters, Melanie Hoch (Jesse) of Gorham, KS, Jennifer Ayala of Russell, KS, and Keri Hejny of Russell, KS; brother, Ed Karst (Nancy) of Aurora, CO; sister, Kathy Hashenberger (Dave) of Russell, KS; as well as 14 grandchildren: Devin, Hannah, Brody, Kaylee, Olivia, Clayton, Blake, Leslie, Selena, Kyelynn, Adam, Adison, Kyona, and Braxton. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Brilynn and Boston.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Everett "Butch" Hupfer, her sister, Pat Bricker and husband Herman, and her brother, Steve Karst.
A graveside service will be held on October 4, 2024, at Cross Plains Cemetery in Russell, KS, beginning at 10:00 AM. This occasion will be an opportunity for friends and family to come together to celebrate Kay's life.
Memorial contributions are suggested for the wishes of the family to be designated at a later date and may be made payable to Keithley Funeral Homes.
