Laquita Fox Garrett was born on January 8, 1955, in
Columbia, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Fletcher and Mollie Leaphart Fox. On Saturday, February 1, 2025, in the peace of her home, Laquita was called to eternal rest from her journey here on Earth.
Laquita attended Lexington Rosenwald High School briefly before receiving private education at St. Jude Catholic School in Sumter, South Carolina. Her calling to serve and care for others was crafted during her boarding residency at St. Jude Catholic School. It was here she developed a passion for senior caregiving and wanted to pursue an education in the nursing field. She went on to Preston College and became a certified Nursing Assistant. From there, she worked in various in-home facilities and private residences caring and advocating for seniors.
Laquita, affectionately called "Quita" by family and friends, shared a love for children and people also. This love allowed her the opportunity to serve on the Janitorial staff at White Knoll High School. As my mother would say, "The mop and broom don't talk back." It was at White Knoll High School that she was surrounded by a loving staff and student body. She loved to attend the prep rallies, where she could show her support but, most importantly, dance, dance, dance. She supported the Special Olympics and taught students with special abilities job skills during their time of job shadowing her. She walked the halls of White Knoll and spoke words of encouragement into the lives of many. She had the opportunity to make many friends who were like family to her. She later retired from White Knoll High School on November 30, 2021.
Laquita accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Laquita was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church and a recurring visitor at Brookland Baptist Church until her health declined. Despite her health, she made sure on Sunday mornings to listen to the preached word on the radio or online.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, colleague, and friend. Though she is no longer physically with us, her bold, unapologetic, loving, kind, and truthful spirit will forever live in the hearts and lives of all those who loved and knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sisters Guena V. Fox and Natasha Fox.
Those who will forever cherish fond and precious memories of Laquita are her daughter, Shyeda L. Garrett; grandson, Tyrik Garrett; brothers, Johnny L Fox Riley and Herbert Fox (Beave); sister, Sayona Hill (Pixie); nephews, Dyral Fox, Walderus Fox (Wally), and Miyore Fox (Boo), niece, Kelita Hill; and niece-in-law, LaToya Fox (Toya), and a host of great-nephews, nieces, cousins, and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom loved and will dearly miss her.
