Larry James Kleinhuizen was born August 19, 1942, to Edwin and Josie (Hoekstra) Kleinhuizen on the family farm in Holland Township. He was baptized and later made his profession of faith at Roseland Reformed Church. While growing up on the farm, Larry learned a hard work ethic which he carried with him the rest of his life. He attended Danube High School and graduated in 1961. While in school, Larry loved playing sports, especially football, baseball and basketball. His Danube Hawks basketball team even went to the state basketball tournament in 1961. After high school, Larry started working for Duininck Construction for a few years before managing a gas station. However, he knew at a young age that his dream was to be in law enforcement. In 1966, Larry was hired as a Deputy Sheriff and was appointed Sheriff two years later. He then went on to win six consecutive elections until his retirement. In January 1965, Larry was united in marriage to Lenora Ammermann. To this union two daughters were born: Tammy and Tara. They later divorced. After being Sheriff for 29 years, Larry retired in 1997. He enjoyed fishing in Canada, hunting pheasants and deer, spending time at his Sunburg hobby farm and spending time with his family. In 1999, Larry was introduced to Sally Carlson and they enjoyed over 25 years of companionship. Larry and Sally enjoyed the simple life, spending time on Green Lake, having morning coffee on their patios, traveling to Duluth, and spending time with family. Larry was a loving companion, dad, grandpa and brother.
Larry is survived by his longtime companion, Sally Carlson; daughters: Tammy Staton of Spicer and Tara (Pete) Mazzocchi of Colleyville, TX; grandchildren: Terry (Leah) Staton, Ethan (Amy) Staton, Erica (Chris) Kiesow, Anna Mazzocchi, Christopher (Olivia) Mazzocchi and Lillian Mazzocchi; seven great-grandchildren; and siblings: Merlin (Jan) Kleinhuizen of Willmar, Jolene (Will) Ammermann of Willmar and Sherri (Ron) Pool of Roseland. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
