Leonard Edward Shaw Jr., 79, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2024, in Des Moines, IA. Len was born November 11, 1944, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Leonard and Frances Shaw. Len was a proud member of the graduating class of 1963 from Oskaloosa Senior High School. Len was an active athlete at Oskaloosa High in both baseball and football. Following high school, Len attended Northeast Missouri State for two years and William Penn College for one year. On June 12, 1966, Len joined the Air Force. Len was sent to Phan Rang AB, Vietnam on October 3, 1966, as an Airman First Class. During his time in the service, he was stationed in many locations and regaled tales of his time in Turkey. Len was honorably discharged from the Air Force on June 12, 1972. Following his time in the service, Len returned to Iowa, where he met the love of his life, Linda. Len and Linda were married on July 10, 1971. After being wed they moved to Altoona, IA, where they remained in their beloved house until their passing. On November 9th, 1975, they welcomed their son, Matthew Drew. They welcomed a second son on July 10, 1978, Leonard Hugh. Len was a Veterans Representative for the Federal Government, where he fought for veterans' rights. He proudly retired at the age of 55. Len was an active member with the American Legion, at one time running the Altoona, IA hall.
Len and Linda were longtime active members of the Altoona Christian Church. Len often spoke of his enjoyment in being an Elder at the church as well as holding many roles within the church.
Len is survived by children Matt (Lindsay), Len (Katie), grandchildren Emma (21), Leonard Evan (14), and Oliver (8), brother Hugh, many beloved nieces and nephews, and his cat Snuggles.
He was preceded in death by, wife Linda, father Leonard, mother Frances, sisters Donna, Char, and Judy.
Len's Celebration of Life will be held at Altoona Christian Church 2890 1st Avenue S. Altoona, IA, 50009 on his 80th birthday, November 11, 2024, at 11am, followed by a luncheon at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Altoona Christian Church or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
