Sandra Richmond Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stroud Funeral Home on Sep. 19, 2025.
Sandra Atkinson Richmond, known affectionately as Sandy, fell asleep in Christ late in the evening on May 21, 2025, just two months shy of her 54 th anniversary. Her husband Jack and son Chris were with her.
Sandy was born on March 19, 1951, to Edsel and Lois Atkinson, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
As a child, she loved spending time in her grandfather's peach orchard and caring for the animals on the family farm.
She was just seventeen when she met her husband-to-be Jack at a local dance. He looked across the room, saw her standing there, and soon fell in love with her. She married Jack on July 25, 1971, attended the Beauty Academy in Newport News, Va., and then she and Jack embarked on a whirlwind tour of military duty stations and civilian employment, finally landing in Texas, where their son Chris was born. Shortly afterward, they moved to Brazoria County, where their family loved and helped so many people.
Sandy treasured her time staying home with Chris, supported his educational and extracurricular activities, and cultivated the skills which she used in her many years as a practicing hair stylist and well-groomed woman. She also enjoyed participating in Bible Study Fellowship, sharing her faith and musical talents on multiple Emmaus walks and events, and volunteering at the Women's Center of Brazoria County Resale Shop. A faithful member of Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson, Sandy served as an elder, taught Sunday School, and sang in the Praise Band; her sweet voice, tender spirit, and sharp wit are missed.
Sandy's initial diagnosis of a brain tumor twenty-five years ago sparked her resilient spirit, clarified how precious her family and friends were to her, and drew her closer to a loving God. While navigating remission, reoccurrence, and other health issues, her faith and perseverance continued to shine on those around her. She especially loved visiting her son and his family and knew the location of every Starbucks between Lake Jackson and Dallas.
Even after she lost the ability to vocalize, her spirit of love and fun would come out through her expressive eyes and captivating smile.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Jack Richmond; her son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Alicia Richmond, and her two grandchildren Aiden and Addyson Richmond; her brother Dexter Atkinson and his wife Debbie; her sister-in-law Beverly Mehaffey and husband Ronald; and extended family across the U.S.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Edsel and Lois Atkinson.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 AM on June 28, 2025, at Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson, Texas.
