Lona Elizabeth Sherman, age 98 of Moorefield, WV, passed away peacefully Sunday Morning, September 29, 2024, at the E.A. Hawse Continuous Care Center in Baker, WV. Born on March 28, 1926, in Petersburg, WV, she was a daughter of the late Sylvanus Bean Carr, Sr. and Muhulda Catherine Stover Carr. Her husband of 66 years, Wallace Gochenour Sherman, preceded her in death in December 2006. Also, she was preceded in death by siblings, Dayton D. Carr, Donald E. Carr, Carl D. Carr, Glenn G. Carr, Sylvanus Carr, Jr., Kenny Carr, Olie L. Carr, Theodore A. Carr, William Carr, Margaret Carr, Mildred Kessel and Mary Thomas.
Lona was a lifelong member of the Oak Dale Christian Church, where she found solace in the teachings of her faith, marking her as a devoted and steadfast member. A woman of numerous talents, she shared her gift of sewing through intricate quilting and various creative projects, showcasing her artistic flair to all who knew her. She was a longtime member of the Old Fields Homemaker’s Extension Club and was also active in the Hardy County Senior Center, embodying the true essence of selflessness through her service. Her life was marked by a deep love for her community, family, and faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara S. Barr and husband Gary of Berryville, VA and Sharon L. Martin of Moorefield, WV; two sisters, Edna Swick of Ft. Ashby, WV and Nina Weatherholtz of Moorefield, WV; four grandchildren, Christopher P. (Michelle) Barr, Michael E. (Evangeline) Barr, Kelly J. (Randy) Shockey and Matthew H. Martin; nine great-grandchildren, C. J. Barr, Silas M. (Summer) Bird, Brooke Shockey (Lucas) Greenwalt, Emily Shockey (Nathan) Mowery, Elizabeth A. Barr, Katherine Barr (Dashiell) Dettman, Eric M. Barr, Andrew M. Barr and Claire D. Barr; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Service of Remembrance will be held beginning at 12:00 PM Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with Pastor Lynn Rohrbaugh officiant. Prior to the service, family and friends will have the opportunity to pay their respects from 11:00 AM onwards. It is an occasion to honor Mrs. Sherman's remarkable life, celebrate her unwavering compassion, and reminisce on the cherished memories she gifted to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
