LUCY HELD
March 8, 1940 – October 30, 2024
Lucy (Lucille Marie) Kofler was born in Forest Hills, New York, just outside of Manhattan, the oldest of four children of John and Lucille Kofler. She grew up as a true city girl, navigating the buses and subways to her Catholic school with her siblings in tow.
Lucy met Ed at a ski event, and they were married for 58 years. They had three children, Jennifer (Greg) Shields, Allison (Bart) Mosele and Matthew Held.
It was a story of opposites attract with her husband Ed! Lucy was the fun, creative and spirited force; providing the yang to Ed’s more straitlaced and disciplined approach.
Ed’s insurance career took them throughout the country but Shoreham, New York and Barrington in the Chicago suburbs were their main homes. She was an interior designer with her own successful business serving clients in the Hamptons, and then Barrington.
In Shoreham, Lucy loved living on the beach, and tolerated boating. Ed fittingly named their speedboat “The African Queen” - and the family enjoyed summers waterskiing.
When they moved to Barrington, Lucy took up golfing, participating in both the 9 and 18 hole leagues at Biltmore Country Club, where she was known for her consistency. When complimented, she often said she preferred to focus more on her outfit than her game! Most importantly, she always made sure new members felt welcome, and always told them not to worry about their score, just to have fun!
One of her biggest loves were her grandchildren: Mia, Luke, Charlotte and Chloe Mosele, Cameron and Michaela Shields, and Claudia Held, ranging in age from 9 to 22. Lucy absolutely adored them. She spent years at the Biltmore pool with them, as well as babysitting, taking them to the park, and just sitting on the floor playing Barbies and legos. She supported them in their sports, from ballet to soccer, rowing, cheerleading and basketball, and could most recently be seen at her grandson’s Varsity Bronco football games at Barrington High School. She also took frequent trips to Colorado to see her granddaughters.
She will be greatly missed by all.
