Madge Colleen Metro Shumway, oldest resident of San Juan County, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on the quiet morning of her passing, October 13, 2025. She was born on March 20, 1927, in Phoenix, Arizona, daughter of Charles Metro and Edna Pauline Branch. She was raised by Pauline and her stepfather Daniel Hayes. She grew up in several towns in Arizona and Southeast Utah. Many of her happy childhood memories were in Bluff,
Utah where she swam in the ponds, rode horses, and played outdoors with lots of friends. She enjoyed music and learned to play the piano. She was also a good swimmer and athlete. She attended San Juan High School where her friend Dixie introduced her to Devar Shumway, Dixie's brother. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple April 4th 1945, just before DeVar, who was in the Navy, was shipped overseas to fight in World War II. They had 11 children (including two sets of twins) Arah Daniel, Joe Sanford, James Stephen, Casey DeVar, Sallee, Gerald Clark, Kerry Rhett, Jill, Jane, Alan Eugene, and Jason Bruce. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years and two sons, Kerry and Jason.
Madge had a green thumb and grew beautiful gardens and always had a beautiful yard. She was well known for her canning, especially her salsa, pickles, and jams.
Her commitment toThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the cornerstone of her life. Madge's life was a testament to her belief in the power of prayer and the strength found in a community of believers. She dedicated countless hours to her church, finding joy in serving and uplifting others. Her devotion to Temple work was unwavering, as she believed in the eternal connections and heritage that bind us all. She and DeVar served a temple mission together once her children were raised.
Madge was intelligent, spiritual, and hard-working. She taught her children the value of work and said, " A job worth doing is a job worth doing well."
As we bid farewell to Madge Colleen Metro Shumway, we do so with the comfort of knowing her journey continues beyond the veil, She leaves a posterity of over 200 descendants over five generations. She is dearly loved and respected by her family and friends.
