It is with great sadness that the family of Martha Marie Dixon (Marie/Ree/Nana) announce her peaceful passing on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the age of 89. Marie was a wife to Doug Dixon and mother of four children, and grandmother of nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She and Doug were married in their hometown of Elberton, Georgia in 1955 and then embarked on a life of travel while they served in the Air Force for 22 years. After military retirement, the family moved back to Georgia in 1974 and settled in Duluth. Marie never missed an event that her children or grandchildren participated in. Nana was a pianist and a huge fan of music (the Eagles), the Braves, and of course the Georgia Dawgs. Family members say her biggest passion in life, besides raising her four children, was serving as Nana to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to family, Marie loved to have a good time with many life-long friends. The quality of time and unconditional love that she and Doug invested with her family over many years has now become by example her legacy.
Marie will be lovingly remembered by her children (in birth order): Mike (Andrea), Jenny (Bill), Dave (Kathleen), and Phil (Ollie); her daughter-in-law, Carol Mclaughlin; sister-in-law, Gloria Ray (Steve); grandchildren: Brian (Andrea) Hill, Andrew Dixon, Jennifer Hill, Keith Dixon, Hayden Dixon, Alex Dixon, Sara Dixon, Rachel Dixon, and Ryan Dixon; great-grandchildren: Tyler Hill and Emma Kate Hill; nieces and nephews: Terri Ray, Shane Ray, Jeff Hyde, Patti McLanahan, Bonnie Hutto, Jane Ann Hofman, Karen Baugh, Greg Baugh, Christina Trexler, Janice Madden, and Belinda Thomas; and numerous other family members and friends. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Doug Dixon (marriage of 64 years); her parents, Minnie Lou Jones Hyde and James Jefferson Hyde; and her siblings: William (Boodie), Earl, George (Mac), and Laura (Lala).
Her life will be celebrated on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Elberton. Visitation will begin at 10:00a.m. with the service following at 11:00a.m. Interment services will follow in Elberton's Historic Elmhurst Cemetery. The family encourages business casual dress.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Marie’s honor may be made to ‘Marie Dixon Friends with Dementia’ PayPal: @marthadixon555, or, send a check to ‘Marie Dixon Friends with Dementia’ to: 303 Lakefront Dr. West Monroe, LA. 71291.
