Mary Wescott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by M. John Scanlan Funeral Home - Pompton Plains on Mar. 6, 2025.
Mary Ellen Therese Wescott, née Waugh, beloved mother of Mary Ellen and Elizabeth, left this wondrous world of ours on March 4, 2025 to, as she would say, go home to her awesome God.
Mary was born on May 25,1934 to John Robert Waugh and Anna Marie Henderson, one of eleven children. She graduated from St. Edmunds High School and received her degree in primary education from Fordham University. Mary entered the Dominican Convent in Sparkill NY in 1953 as Sr. Regina Agnes Waugh. After 10 years, she left the convent. She was a corporate secretary at Douglas Elliman Gibbons & Ives in New York City where she met and later married James A. Wescott on September 5, 1970. She later taught Kindergarten at St. Ignatius Loyola School in New York City. It was there that she thrived as she nurtured her students, made so many cherished friendships with her students, their families, colleagues, priests, brothers and sisters of the parish; many of whom she still corresponded with until her passing. They were like family to her.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, James Amos Wescott, brother Thomas Waugh, sister-in law, Marie Waugh, brother, William Waugh, sister-in-law, Ann Marie Waugh, sister, Bernadette Schultz, brother-in-law, John Schultz, sister, Alice Sherwood and brother-in-law, Warren Sherwood.
Mary is survived by her "baby" sister, Sr. Agnes Bernard Waugh, O.P. of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill New York, her sister-in-law Catherine Waugh, her daughter Mary Ellen Wescott (Fogleman) and her partner in life, David Bronkhurst, her daughter Elizabeth Ann Wescott, her cherished grandsons (the joys of her life), James Fogleman, Christopher Slee and Sebastian Bronkhurst and embraced as "Grandma Mary" by Justin and Derek Bronkhurst. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews from this large family of hers and wonderful friends, all of whom she loved and adored.
The family will receive visitors from 1-4 pm on Sunday, March 9 at Scanlan's. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am on Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Haskell.
In lieu of flowers, Mary's wish was for any donations to be made to the Dominican Convent of Sparkill New York for the care of elderly sisters or to Saint Ignatius Loyola School for students in need.
