Mary Kay, age 85, of Middletown, DE, formerly of Newark, DE peacefully passed away on Friday, October 11, 2024.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late George B. and Olga Hannan. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Ed. Mary Kay was a caretaker at heart and her most important job was taking care of her family. She also worked for several years in the Benefits Office at the University of Delaware. One of her greatest joys was making her famous peanut butter balls every Christmas for family and friends. She was also fond of working at the Holy Angels Christmas Bazaar when her children were young. Mary Kay was enthusiastic about word puzzles and playing Scrabble, and in her final years still enjoyed reading the paper, doing the word find, watching her favorite soap, and even at the end, the mention of ice cream still brought a smile to her face. She also enjoyed the companionship of her little feline friend.
Mary Kay is survived by her sons, Craig and wife Robin of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Rob and his wife, Bonnie of Middletown, Delaware; daughter Cathi of Newark, Delaware; grandchildren Clare of Washington, DC; and Bennett of New York, NY; brother George (Bud) Hannan and his wife Judy of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. She also had many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Accent Care Hospice, especially her nurse Amanda, and aide Perdessa who took such wonderful care of her. A very special thank you goes to her amazing caregiver, Judy Schmitt who cared for her as if she were her own mother.
Family and friends are invited to visit the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808 on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 10:00AM to 11:00AM, with a funeral service beginning at 11:00AM. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Faithful Friends Animal Society, 165 Airport Rd, New Castle, DE 19720 or visit www.faithfulfriends.us.
