Mike Childres of Turlock, California passed away at the age of 76 on September 1. He was born in Modesto, California to Harlon and Nora Childres, and grew up with his brothers Doug and Dan. Mike graduated from Hilmar High School in 1966, and two months later enlisted into the Army, where he served in Vietnam as a heavy equipment operator. After the Army he worked for George Kaper, then for the Local 3 Operating Engineers, where he retired after 35 years. In 1973 he married Gladie Fentem and together they raised their two children, Amanda and Bryan.
Mike was a person who loved his family, loved watching his family and grandchildren grow, enjoyed bass fishing, and appreciated the birds who would come to feed in his backyard. Mike was a member of the Modesto Ambassadors, and a member of the American Legion. Mike also happened to be Hilmar High Schools biggest football fan, where he would cheer on his Alma Mater at every football game!
Mike is survived by his wife of 51 years Gladie, his two children Amanda (Michael) Sutton and Bryan (Tracy) Childres, his brother Dan (Kristine) Childres, as well as his grandchildren Valerie (Preston) Bentz, David Sutton, Tyler Childres, Dustin Childres, and Melanie Childres, as well as his great grandchild Kaitlynn Bentz.
A Funeral will be held at Allen Mortuary on Thursday, September 12, 2024 starting at 10am. A visitation will precede the funeral starting at 9am. Burial to follow at the North Hilmar Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Turlock American Legion, 75 Bothun Road.
