Rev. Michael Dennis "Denny" Costner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted pastor, passed away peacefully on September 14th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 68 years old.
Denny was born and raised in Hiddenite, North Carolina, to Charles "Shorty" Costner and Marie Costner. Growing up alongside his siblings-Wanda Moore, Steve Costner, Sherry Ingram, and Dale Costner-Denny was known for his warm heart, quick wit, and unwavering commitment to his family and faith.
A proud Alexander Central High School graduate, Denny's journey took him from the familiar grounds of Hiddenite to a life filled with purpose and devotion. After high school, he met and married the love of his life, Tammy Costner, of Taylorsville, North Carolina. Together, they built a life rich in love and faith, celebrating 46 wonderful years of marriage. Denny and Tammy were blessed with two children, Jessica Deaton and Jamie Costner, and a beloved granddaughter, Maddie Deaton, who brought immense joy and pride to Denny's life. He enjoyed spending time with Maddie, often indulging her with affection and treats.
Before answering the call to ministry, Denny worked in various fields, but his true passion lay in serving others through his faith. He dedicated much of his life to the ministry, unwaveringly serving two church congregations. He began his ministry at Linney's Grove Baptist Church in Hiddenite, NC, before moving with his family to Bennettsville, SC, where he served Bennettsville Second Baptist Church for an inspiring 29 years.
Denny's commitment to service extended beyond his local congregation. He spent many years as a captain for a mission team, leading trips to Honduras and working on projects across the United States, including churches in Mississippi and West Virginia. His hands-on approach and heartfelt dedication made a lasting impact on many communities.
In his personal life, Denny cherished time spent with his family at the beach. It was not unusual to find him riding on the golf cart, fist-bumping others at Ocean Lakes during the summer. He recently discovered a passion for cruise ships, finding joy in their adventures and relaxation. Denny and his wife loved traveling to Pennsylvania to attend the Wheel Horse Show, see a Bible story at the Sight and Sound Theater, and stop by the Hershey Chocolate Factory.
Rev. Denny Costner's legacy is one of unwavering faith, compassion, and service. Through his ministry and mission work, he touched countless lives, and his memory will be a guiding light for all who knew him.
A memorial service to celebrate Denny's life will be held at Bennettsville Second Baptist on September 17th at 4 pm, with a visitation preceding the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Scotland Regional Hospice Morrison Manor or Bennettsville Second Baptist Mission Fund.
Denny is survived by his loving wife, Tammy; his children, Jessica and Jamie; his granddaughter, Maddie; his siblings, Wanda, Sherry, and Dale; and numerous extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles "Shorty" and Marie Costner, and his brother, Steve Costner.
May Rev. Denny Costner rest in peace, and may his legacy of love and faith continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
