It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Orlie Davis, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, papa, and friend, who fought valiantly against numerous health challenges throughout his life. Mike was the steadfast rock for his wife, Kathy, and the ideal partner. Mike taught Kathy how to catch fish; she introduced him to the theater and showtunes. Mike and Kathy shared an interest in history, space, nature, fishing, and eating great food. Mike was an excellent cook and showed his love by preparing fabulous meals.
Mike is cherished by his children, Tyler, Andy, and Sadie, and his stepchildren, Maddy, Danny, and Megan. Michael's pride in his children was evident in every conversation, as he celebrated their accomplishments and the incredible individuals they have become.
Mike was born in Geneva, Alabama to Lynn Davis and Yvonne (Freed) Davis, on August 22, 1959. Along with his younger sister, Lori, the family moved to Worthington, Minnesota, where Mike lived until attending and graduating from Mankato State University. Mike spent many years in the food service industry; most of his career spent with Chi-Chi's Mexican Restaurant (Duluth and the Twin Cities) and Sysco Foods, where he retired in 2018.
Many years ago, Mike was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which eventually led to the need for a new heart. His journey took a miraculous turn six years ago when he received a heart transplant that gifted him extra time with his family. His gratitude for his donor remained steadfast, a testament to his appreciation for life. Just 14 months ago, he received a kidney transplant, which once again proved to be a life-saving blessing.
Despite the complications and setbacks he faced, Mike's spirit never wavered. He approached each challenge with determination, always asking, "What's next?" Tragically, in September, he was diagnosed with stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma, and the family learned there were no viable treatment options. Mike's choice was to go home and be surrounded by his family. After one week of hospice, Mike left us for his heavenly home.
As we navigate this difficult time without him, we ask for your thoughts and prayers for Mike and our family. His legacy of love, strength, and resilience will forever remain in our hearts.
Mike is survived by his wife, Kathy, mom Yvonne Thomas, sister Lori Hamilton, children Andy Davis (Jen), Sadie Davis (Brevin), Tyler Davis (Sam), stepchildren, Danny McHugh (Jessica), Madeline McHugh, Megan Neely (Aaron), nephews Noah and Isaac Hamilton, many grandchildren, cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank the medical and transplant teams at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Allina Hospice for their dedicated care and compassion. There are too many to name here, but Mike and Kathy developed friendships with many wonderful professionals over the years.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Coon Rapids Washburn McReavy Chapel, 1827 Coon Rapids Blvd., Coon Rapids, MN. Visitation will be at 10 am, service at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to organizations that support organ donation and cancer research.
Rest in peace, Mike. Your light will continue to shine in the lives of all who loved you, and you will never be forgotten.
