Mr. Charles Haynes Obituary

The community is mourning the passing of Mr. Charles Douglas Haynes, who peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. A man of deep faith, unwavering dedication to his family, and a quiet but profound commitment to serving others, Mr. Haynes leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity that will be remembered by many.

Known affectionately as "Papa Doug" in Haiti and "Paw Paw" to his family and close friends, Mr. Haynes grew up in Hamlet, North Carolina, where he excelled as a star football player. His athletic prowess earned him a scholarship to Appalachian State University. He was an avid UNC Tarheel basketball fan. He proudly served his country in the Air Force, stationed in Washington State. He often fondly recalled his time as a baseball coach during his military service, highlighting his passion for mentorship and sports.

After his time in the Air Force, Mr. Haynes returned to Hamlet and worked for the railroad for five years before relocating to Atlanta, Georgia. He then embarked on a successful career at General Motors, dedicating over 40 years to the company, demonstrating his strong work ethic and commitment.

Retirement allowed Mr. Haynes to dedicate his time to two of his greatest passions: his grandchildren and the work of Eternal Hope in Haiti (EHIH). Founded by his late wife and family in 1991, EHIH became a central focus of Mr. Haynes' post-retirement life. He immersed himself in the work, traveling to Haiti, where he was known as a quiet, kind, and supportive figure, providing essential assistance to the foundation's endeavors.

Mr. Haynes was a devoted member of First Baptist Snellville/Church on Main for over 40 years, further underscoring the importance of faith in his life. He was remembered as a dedicated spouse, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love for his family was evident in the way he championed their successes, often found coaching from the sidelines or cheering enthusiastically from the stands. 

Beyond his family and philanthropic efforts, Mr. Haynes enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He was an ice cream enthusiast, always eager to try a new flavor. He also enjoyed playing cards and could often be found looking for a chance to Carolina Shag. Now in heaven with his beloved wife, Dr. Twilla Locklear Haynes, who was his shag partner for over 56 years, he is likely doing just that. 

Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Haynes and Mary Hale Haynes, and his siblings, Betty, Jamie, Geraldine, Dorothy, Florie, Phillip, and Byron Frank.

He is survived by his children: Dr. Angela Haynes (Bernard) Ferere of Hoschton, Charles Rodney (Elaina) Haynes of Auburn, and Dr. Hope (Patrick) Bussenius of Duluth, and son in love, Kenneth (Danyelle) Lynch; seven grandchildren, Elie (Ana) Haynes, Abrielle Bussenius, Rebekah Haynes, Jacob Haynes, Luke Bussenius, Samuel Haynes, and Seth Haynes; and great-grandchild, Isabella Haynes.

A graveside service with Air Force honors will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. All guests need to arrive by 12:15 PM for the processional lineup at the cemetery.

The memory of Mr. Charles Douglas Haynes will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his legacy of kindness, service, and devotion to his family will continue to inspire.
