Nancy Sperry Kennedy, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, at the age of 90.
Nancy was the cherished mother of Leslie Feeman (Jim), Lynda Karlis (Richard), Amy Sunderlik (Michael), Anne Iwasko (Gregg), and Mathew Kennedy (Laurie Houtsinger). She leaves behind a devoted family. She was "Nonnie" to her seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Her love also extended to her nieces and nephews, including a special bond with her nephew Steve Avis (Janine) as she would look forward to their calls every Sunday.
Nancy was born on September 22, 1934 in Buffalo, New York, to Irving and Lela Sperry (nee Aleshire). Growing up in New York, Nancy embodied strength and resilience. Despite the loss of her parents and a sister at a young age, she faced life's challenges with grace and a spirit that inspired those around her. She later relocated to Michigan, where she raised five remarkable children on her own. Nancy achieved a proud milestone, earning her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, at a time when it was challenging for women to pursue higher education. A successful career with General Motors followed, and after retiring, she continued to share her kindness through volunteer work at Beaumont Hospital.
Nancy was known for her intellect and her passion for music, especially opera. She was a voracious reader, spoke French, and had a trove of funny sayings that her family will remember fondly. Her active role in her church and her social circle reflected her deep-rooted values and her dedication to the community. Nancy was incredibly proud of her children and their families, leaving a beautiful family legacy.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a service at 4:00 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy, Michigan 48084 (248) 362-2500.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes are suggested to the Gentiva Foundation for Hospice or the Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson's.
