Norma Oman Obituary

Norma June Oman, 87, a long-time Ironwood, MI, resident, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024, with her husband by her side, at a Twin Cities assisted living center. Norma began her life in Saxon, WI, as the youngest of five children born to John and Bessie Nordberg.
After graduating from Saxon High School, Norma married Eric Oman on July 30, 1955, and they built their life together in one of the prettiest spots on Lake Superior, Little Girl's Point. Norma was a gifted artist who captured the ever-changing moods of the Great Lake and the local landscape with sketches and paintings. The Oman home was a lively place where they lovingly raised two sons; hosted campers and many family gatherings; introduced their beloved grandsons to the treasures of Lake Superior; and enjoyed spirited card and dice games. Norma crocheted beautiful blankets cherished by her family members.
Many area residents will remember Norma as the nice lady who helped them with their taxes. Norma proved to be a savvy businesswoman; she owned her own H&R Block franchise for many years in downtown Ironwood.
In their retirement, Norma and Eric set out in an RV to explore the U.S. and ultimately became Arizona snowbirds. They continued to alternate time between Lake Superior and Arizona until recently when worsening health issues led them to relocate to the Twin Cities to be near family and skilled doctors. Their son made sure they settled in a place that looked out over a beautiful lake, just as they had done for him in his childhood. Always a devoted husband, Eric stayed by Norma's side as she fought a hard battle with dementia and slipped away.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Jack, Bill, and Eddie. She is survived by her husband Eric; sons Eric Jr. of Wakefield, MI, and Darrell (Connie) and grandsons Alex and Maxwell, of Minnesota; sister Marian (Carl); and sisters-in-law Sally Nelson, Diana Oman, Mck Nordberg, and Pat Nordberg Dow (John) as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family asks that memorials be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, E1891 Brace Road, Ironwood, MI, 49938.
