Ray Voyd Whitehurst, 66, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
A loving husband, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, Ray's life was filled with laughter and connection. Ray treasured time spent with his wife, Jama, his beloved grandchildren, and his many close friends. He enjoyed staying close to his brothers, no matter the distance, through group text messaging chats. Ray was known for his generous spirit and never hesitated to help those in need and was deeply loved by his many close friends.
Ray was a devoted and hardworking man who truly loved his work. As the proud owner of S&W Metal Works for 45 years, he poured his heart into his craft and took great pride in the business he built with the help of his dedicated coworkers. Outside of work, Ray was an avid fisherman, always happiest with a fishing rod in hand and the peace of the water around him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lindsay Whitehurst, and daughter, Hali Whitehurst. Though he will be missed beyond measure, Ray found comfort in knowing he would be joining his father and daughter in heaven. His kindness, humor, generosity, and steadfast love will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
Ray is survived by his wife of 27 years, Jama C. Whitehurst; mother, Claire Whitehurst; brothers, Jay Whitehurst (Sheila), Sam Whitehurst (April), and Ted Whitehurst (Dawn); grandchildren, Camdyn Whitehurst, Carson Cook, Harper Cook, and Landri Cook; nieces and nephews, Kristen, Abigail, Addison, Quay, Chase, Mari, Emily, and James; and his extended family and friends.
The family will have a private interment service and will host a friends and family 'celebration of life' at the Cherry Farm afterwards at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 18. The Cherry Farm is located on Highway 33 across from Tarboro Airport Rd. The white gates will be open, and golf carts will be available for those who need assistance getting from the parking area to the venue.
