Phillip Carter Obituary

Mr. Phillip "Phil" Smith Carter, age 73, of Elkin, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Yadkin Valley Senior Living, with his daughter by his side.

He was born on June 13, 1952, in Surry County, NC, to the late Edward Andrew Carter Jr. and Nellie Smith Carter.

Phil was an outgoing and charismatic man whose life was marked by both music and ministry. In his early years, he played in the band Desperados, which gained recognition and was featured on the radio. He later dedicated many years to serving as a minister while living in Elkin.

Phil continued his education in the Raleigh area, attending both Duke University and the University of North Carolina. During this time, he served as a chaplain at a women's prison in Raleigh, as well as at a local hospital, offering guidance and comfort to many.

After returning to Elkin, Phil worked as a rehabilitation counselor before opening his own counseling practice, the Carter Center, where he continued his lifelong mission of helping others.

Phil was a man of many talents and interests. He had a deep love for music and especially enjoyed playing his guitars. He was also passionate about fly fishing and became skilled in crafting his own flies-so much so that local stores purchased his work. Phil was also a gifted cook whose meals reflected creativity and variety. He enjoyed experimenting with different ingredients, bringing a sense of curiosity and care to the meals he prepared.

Phil's life was not without its challenges, and those who knew him well understood his complexities. Yet he expressed care and connection in his own ways, leaving lasting impressions through his passions, his conversations, and the moments he shared.

He is survived by his sons, Phillip Smith (Lada) Carter II and Bryan Edward (Melissa) Carter; his daughter, Sarah Renee Carter; his brother, Billy Carter (Jeannie); and four grandchildren, Jorge Coreno Jr., Adriana Coreno, Austin Coreno, and Antonio Coreno.

In accordance with Phil's wishes, a graveside service will be held on his property at 974 Pleasant Ridge Rd., Elkin, NC, on March 31, 2026, at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to assist with final expenses are greatly appreciated and may be made to Johnson Funeral Home.
