Richard Dean Brombaugh, passed away peacefully at his home in Stockport, Iowa, on October 26, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on July 26, 1946, in Fairfield, to Robert Frederick and Rhea Elizabeth (Stecker) Brombaugh, Richard's early years were marked by a move from Cedar Rapids to a family farm in Stockport in 1950, where he would cultivate not only the land but also a life full of purpose and service.
Richard's formative years were filled with active involvement in his community and school. A 1964 graduate of Van Buren Community High School, he was a member of the FFA, participated in school plays, and showcased his athletic abilities in basketball and baseball. His pursuit of education led him to Northeast Missouri State University, now known as Truman State, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in General Agriculture in 1968 and was a charter member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity.
Richard's sense of duty extended beyond his academic achievements. In May 1969, he joined the United States Navy, serving his country with honor and distinction. Stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, he spent time aboard an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean before being deployed to Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge in September 1972, Richard returned to Stockport, where he dedicated himself to farming the land he so dearly loved from 1972 until his retirement in 2015.
Throughout his life, Richard's commitment to his community was unwavering. He served as president of the Van Buren School Board and was a past FFA president in Van Buren County. His dedication to service organizations was evident through his membership in the Stockport American Legion and the Workman Lodge No. 634 A.F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge in Stockport.
Richard's legacy is carried on by; his daughter, Marie Brombaugh of Stockport, his son, Brian Brombaugh; his brother, Marvin Brombaugh (Nancy) of Champaign, IL; his sisters, Susan Davis (George) of Keosauqua and Linda Jaffe (Rich) of Arizona; his three grandchildren, Cody, Alexis, and Brendan Brombaugh; and his great-grandson, Isaac.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sarah, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage since August 15, 1970, after meeting in Jacksonville, Florida, and his parents, Robert and Rhea.
Visitation for Richard will open at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 8, 2024, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Cranston Family Funeral Home in Keosauqua.
