Richard P. Davis, 80, of Mashpee, formerly of Plymouth, passed away at home surrounded by his family on March 27, 2025. He was a loving husband of nearly 57 years to Charlotte (Allen) Davis of Mashpee.
Born in Taunton, MA, son of the late William and Eleanor (Molfentor) Davis. Richard graduated from Taunton High School and Salem State College, Suma Cum Laude. He was a United States Coast Guard Veteran, serving from 1965-1971.
Following his service, he began his career as a high school accounting teacher and was class advisor to many graduating classes. He spent most of his career at Whitman Hanson High School. To his students he was more than just an educator, he was a mentor, a supporter, and a friend. Richard had an incredible way of bringing out the best in his students and fellow teachers, always encouraging them to believe in themselves and reach their fullest potential. Beyond the classroom, Richard's impact was profound. His dedication to
Shriners Hospital was nothing short of remarkable. Year after year, he inspired his students to participate in the MHSFPI Prospect Book project, ensuring that every dollar raised from the sale of the football recruiting book supported the hospital's efforts. As a result of this effort, he was unanimously voted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2021, he is the only non-coach to be inducted.
Richard enjoyed all sports, including bowling, tennis, and was passionate for the game of golf. In his retirement he worked part time at Holly Ridge Golf Club in Sandwich where he made many new friends. He was also an avid reader and never missed an opportunity to play cards with family and friends. Most of all, Richard loved his family and he would always make a point to remind them how much he appreciated them. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his greatest pride and gave him strength during tough times.
He was a member of the Red Cross Gallon Club for his regular blood donations. He served as financial secretary for his church for 15 years and volunteered in many capacities over the years. His generosity, kindness, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others will never be forgotten. He never failed to remember birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions, always sending his best wishes and reminding students and friends how much they mattered. His ability to make others feel valued and appreciated was one of his many gifts.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Kevin T. Davis of Johnston, RI, Cindi Leigh Davis of Weymouth, Shawn M. Costa and his wife Rebecca of Plymouth, and Bethany Leigh Davis of Troutman, NC. He also leaves his grandchildren, Anthony, Richard, Ashton, Henry and William, and his great grandson, Tony. In addition, he is survived by his niece Tracy Allen of Arizona. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Alan Davis.
A celebration of life will be held this spring. A private burial with Military Honors will take place in the MA National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
Let us honor Richard's memory by striving to be more like him-seeing the best in others, nurturing potential, and helping those around us succeed. May we all carry forward his legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people. Memorial donations in Richard's memory may be made to the
