Richard Franklin “Dick” Shaw, 82, of Maple Leaf Village in North Hampton, New Hampshire, passed away on May 7, 2024.

Born on July 9, 1941, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Ray and Margaret (Batchelder) Shaw, Dick attended Portsmouth High School where he developed an interest in electricity, radio repair, and automotive maintenance, while being active in the audio-visual club. After graduating in 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and traveled the world, spending time in the north Atlantic and the Caribbean.

After serving the city of Portsmouth as a police officer, he joined the ranks of the University of New Hampshire Police Department in 1973, serving with valor and integrity until his retirement in 2004. Dick had the distinction of being the first officer to retire from the UNHPD with thirty years of service.

Dick was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and sociable nature. He enjoyed going for walks, spending time with his family, and listening to his favorite song, “A White Sport Coat” by Marty Robbins.

He is survived by three sons, Rick Shaw and wife Donna of Middleton, Brian Shaw of Middleton, and Spencer Shaw of North Hampton; sister Betty Gregory of Portsmouth; brother Perry Shaw of Dover; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother Ray Shaw; sister Roberta MacKenzie; half-siblings Brandon Shaw and Margaret Estees; and son Dale Shaw.
