Janet M. Gill Gentry, 69, died peacefully at home on May 9, 2025.Janet was born on January 27, 1956, in Pelham Bay, Bronx, NY, daughter of Edward and Evelyn Gill. The family moved to Poughkeepsie, NY in 1965. Janet moved to
Stamford, CT in the late 1970s.Janet was a 1974 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes H.S. in Poughkeepsie, where she was a cheerleader. She graduated from SUNY Albany in 1977 with a B.S. in Accounting, Summa Cum Laude. She received her Master's in Taxation from Pace University in 1998.During high school and college, Janet worked for Carrols and then Grand Union in Poughkeepsie and Albany.Janet was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Janet began her career in accounting at David Lewittes and Company in Poughkeepsie. Her employment included Coopers & Lybrand, NYNEX, Verizon, Bresnan Communications, and Aspen Schools. Most recently, she was Chief Financial Officer at Pyramid Real Estate Group in Stamford, retiring in 2024.Janet married the love of her life, David Gentry, on April 27, 2002, at St. John's Basilica, Stamford. They gave a loving home to their children, Alona and Oleg.
She is survived by her husband and children. She is also survived by a brother, Stephen Gill, of Poughkeepsie; brother-in-law James Van Tassell, wife Dr. Melody Festa; nephew Dr. Barry Van Tassell (Nicki), nephew Dr. Evan Van Tassell (wife Sarah); 2 aunts; several cousins; and in-laws. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Doris Van Tassell, in 1995.
Janet was active in the Stamford community. She was a member and officer of the Stamford Chorale for many years. Janet was an adult leader of the Children's Choir at St. John's Basilica where she was also a choir member. She and her husband served on the board at the Long Ridge Swim Club. Also, she was a supporter and volunteer for the Hartwick College Swim Team of which her children were participants.
Janet enjoyed drawing, reading, playing mahjong, her cockatiels, and cats.
Janet made many friends through the years and was very good at maintaining those friendships. She was a wonderful conversationalist and told enjoyable stories of her life adventures and situations. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 15, from 3-7 pm at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford CT. Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 16, at 10:00 at St. John's Basilica, 279 Atlantic Ave., Stamford. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
