Robert D. Hanks, 81, of Walker Township, Huntingdon, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at his residence. Born June 15, 1943 at home in McConnellstown, he was a son of the late John W. and Phyllis I. (Wasson) Hanks. He was united in marriage to the former Sandra L. Reed on September 13, 1986, in Bellefonte. His wife of 38 years survives at their residence.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael R. Hanks of McConnellstown; a step-daughter, Buffy J. Hicks of Mount Union; three grandchildren, Kelci Burley and husband, Reagan, of North Carolina, Samuel R. Hanks of Shippensburg, and Jayden Hanks of McConnellstown; and three step-grandchildren, Nicholas Keller, Chelsea Coburn, and Reghan Reeder. He is also survived by a brother, Jere W. Hanks of Hesston.
Mr. Hanks was a member of the McConnellstown United Methodist, McConnellstown.
He was a member and past commander of Standing Stone Post #1754, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Frank P. Hommon Post #24, American Legion, B.P.O.E. Lodge #976, and Mount Moriah Lodge #300, F&AM, all of Huntingdon.
He attended Huntingdon public schools and was a 1961 graduate of Huntingdon High School.
Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1961, and served aboard the USS Wasp CVS-18 during the Cuban Missile Crisis – Blockade. He was honorably discharged in March 1964, and attained the rate of Yeoman Third Class.
Mr. Hanks began working at the former A&P Store in Huntingdon at the age of 16 in 1959. He returned to work there following his military service until 1969. In 1970, he began employment with SCI-Huntingdon, retiring in 1997 as Business Manager.
For 19 years, Mr. Hanks was affiliated with the Huntingdon V.F.W. Teener League Baseball as a coach, treasurer, president and Area V commissioner. He was also an avid golfer who enjoyed traveling to Myrtle Beach, SC, hunting, and was a member of Camp Shiloh in Hesston.
Friends will be received from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 6, 2024, and from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service on Monday, October 7, 2024, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St.,
Huntingdon, PA 16652. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Monday, October 7th, at the funeral home, with Pastor Patricia Shope officiating. Graveside military honors will be accorded at Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Walker Township, Huntingdon.
